Boston Dynamics Is Barking Up A New Robot

If a Qoobo isn’t enough for you pet lovers out there, all you have to do is wait until 2019 and you’ll be able to buy a Robo Dog from Boston Dynamics. Soon, you’ll be able to have a metal canine companion for all those out there who can’t weather the storm of having a real pup.

Meet the SpotMini Model. SpotMini is the smallest robo dog made by Boston Dynamics, being just shy of 3 feet tall and weight 66 pounds. That’s right, he isn’t really a lap dog, but be grateful you won’t have to put up with barking all night long. SpotMini has a battery life of 1.5 hours, so he’ll spend more time charging than actually barking up a storm for you.

Boston Dynamics is on route to produce 1,000 SpotMini models annually starting in 2019. The robotic hound uses perception sensors and claw-like “hands” to maneuver and pick up objects. While it may have taken the innovation firm a while to perfect the model, it’s still a mystery what exactly anyone would need a robo dog for, or how much one might cost.

Let’s just add this one to the growing list of new robots being developed that don’t really serve a purpose just yet. Watch above for an evolution of Boston Dynamics’ robo dogs as they went through the development process.
