Apple has done something it has never done before. It built a phone that folds in half.
At its September 9 event, called “Surprise and Shine,” Apple ended seven years of rumors and leaks by officially unveiling its first foldable iPhone. Many, including us, expected the name iPhone Fold or iPhone Ultra. Apple went a different direction and named it the iPhone Duo.
A New Shape for iPhone
The iPhone Duo uses a squat folding design that looks like a passport. Closed, it has a short and wide outer screen of 5.4 inches, which Apple says covers 90% of the screen area on the iPhone 18 Pro. Open it up, and the phone reveals a 7.6-inch inner display that Apple compares to using an iPad mini.
Both screens are Super Retina XDR displays with ProMotion, an Always-On mode, and a nano-texture finish. The inner display reaches a peak brightness of 3,000 nits. Apple says the unfolded screen is 50% larger than the one on the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
One detail that will matter to buyers is the crease. Apple says it uses optically clear adhesives that let the display layers move smoothly as the phone folds, which should reduce stress on the screen and keep the fold line as flat as possible.
Power Under the Screen
The iPhone Duo features the A20 Pro chip, the same chip powering the iPhone 18 Pro line. Apple says the 6-core CPU is up to 20% faster than the A19 Pro, and the 7-core GPU is up to 40% faster. The chip also includes a dual 16-core Neural Engine with twice the processing power of the previous generation. It is built on a 2-nanometer process, Apple’s most advanced manufacturing process yet.
Cameras and Battery
The iPhone Duo camera arsenal includes:
- A 48MP Fusion main camera with a built-in 2x optical telephoto lens
- A 48MP Fusion ultra-wide camera with macro focus
- A front-facing Center Stage camera that can shoot photos and video in any orientation, whether the phone is folded or open
Video recording supports 4K at 120 frames per second in Dolby Vision, along with cinematic-style effects that can be added after filming, at up to 60 frames per second.
It has a dual-battery design. Apple rates it at up to 31 hours of video playback using the inner screen, or 44 hours using the outer screen. Charging is fast too. The phone reaches 50% battery in about 20 minutes wired, or 30 minutes wirelessly.
Built for Daily Use
A folding phone has to survive constant opening and closing, and Apple built the Duo with durability in mind. It has an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance, a frame and hinge cover made from grade 5 titanium, and Ceramic Shield 2 on the front and back, which Apple says is 3x more scratch-resistant than before. The hinge is designed for smooth, balanced resistance meant to hold up over years of use.
Apple has not shared an exact number of fold cycles the hinge is rated for. That means the real durability will only become clear once the phone reaches customers and is tested over time.

Mixed Reactions So Far
Early reaction to the iPhone Duo is split. Plenty of people are excited simply because Apple finally entered the foldable phone category after years of speculation, and some reviewers who got hands-on time have praised the display quality and overall design. At the same time, the price has drawn the most criticism, with a $1,999 starting cost putting the Duo well above every other iPhone Apple currently sells.
It is still early days. Most of these opinions are based on a single event and short demos, not weeks of daily use. That real test starts when the iPhone Duo ships to customers on October 23.
