Gamers should be on high alert as many Fortnite and Steam accounts have been hacked.
Players across the country have reported ransomware and account take-overs after being offered the opportunity to download a free game or cheating app. Some folks want to try to get as much of a competitive edge as possible and succumbed to the offers.
You need to be careful if you are playing Fortnite and have been asked to download programs with an .Srk extension. These usually promise to give you a competitive advantage and show you the locations of other players. If you agree to the download, ransomware will encrypt all of your files and you’ll be told to pay the hacker in order to access your PC again. You will be threatened with the potential of losing all of your files if a payment is not completed in a certain amount of time.
Steam subscribers have been getting hacked with the promise of receiving a free game. If you agree, hackers will take over your account and then send free games out to all of your friends. The goal is to steal all of your credentials and Steam inventory to sell on the black market.
If you have accepted any of these offers, your account could be compromised. It is wise to think about following some of these simple rules.
- Do not download any cheating programs or game hacks from third-party websites.
- Do not click on any links that require you to leave your game. The offer is fake.
- Keep your anti-virus and anti-malware up-to-date.
- If your Steam account has been taken over, report it to Steam immediately. If you have a credit card linked up to it, notify the credit card company and bank immediately as well.
- If you feel your computer has been taken over by ransomware, disconnect from the Internet immediately. Take your computer to a professional for assistance. Don’t attempt to fix this on your own.
If an offer seems too good to be true, there is a strong possibility that it is. Don’t be fooled by gimmicks or other tricks. Stick to just playing your game and avoid any temptations.
