A little rhythm does a mind good.

A study conducted in the Journal of Educational Psychology found that students who participated in musical activities scored higher on Math, Science and English exams. It showed that the higher engaged students were, the more above grade level their results showed. The study, which was conducted in Canada, had 112,916 public high school students participate.

The results could certainly be multifaceted, but they attributed the enhancements of broad competencies, executive function, working memory, self-regulation, and information processing to the effects of studying music and its beneficial academic results. Researchers also commented on the amount of time needed to study and work with music. They compared that to the time commitment needed to focus on challenging math problems or lab results.

With the determination of students who want to study music, it is no surprising that most shared that same determination in their academic studies. They were committed to understanding music and that same commitment translated to academic success. Music is not only great to listen to, but it is teaching habits that we can use successfully for the rest of our lives.
