Is God Of War 2018’s God Of Gaming?

Rebooting franchises can always be a risky endeavor. April 20th’s release of the eighth installment of the God of War franchise was meant not to be a reboot, however, but instead a “reimagining” of the beloved series according to creative director Cory Barlog.

While the game follows chronologically in the series timeline and does not stray from the premise of main character Kratos fighting mythological creatures, the 2018 release featured many departures from the original seven games. Among these, the game featured a third-person, over the shoulder camera instead of a fixed cinematic camera style. Additionally, the focus was shifted to be loosely based around Nordic mythology this time.

And these risks paid off big time. God of War quickly became Playstation 4’s fastest selling exclusive console game in the console’s history, surmounting 5 million copies sold worldwide within a month of release. 3.1 million of those sales occurred just 3 days after the game’s launch.

While Far Cry 5 remains as the top selling video game for the year of 2018, it also had a cross-platform advantage. For a PS4 exclusive to break historical records, it revitalizes the console and the franchise itself to push further for future installments.

Sony’s Santa Monica Studio Head, Sharon Studstill, said “I would personally like to thank the millions of fans around the world who decided to embark on Kratos’ latest adventure with us.”

Hopefully the success of God of War will transition into a positive lead-in, as June’s E3 conference is just around the corner.
