This minimalist Swedish-designed air purifier purifies a medium-sized room in under 15 minutes without disturbing anyone in it.
The Blueair Blue Pure 311i Max is one of the most recommended air purifiers for bedrooms, living rooms, and home offices. It comes from Blueair, a Swedish brand known for pairing strong filtration with minimal design. The 311i Max stands in the middle of Blueair’s Blue Pure Max lineup, built for rooms up to 450 square feet.
We tested this and now have enough to put into words what this air purifier actually offers.
Design and Build
The Blueair Blue Pure 311i Max looks more like home decor than an appliance. It has a tapered cylindrical shape, standing 19 inches tall and 12.5 inches wide at the base. It weighs under 8 pounds, so carrying it between rooms is easy.
The outer layer is a washable fabric pre-filter available in several colors so that you can match it to your space. The controls sit on top of the unit and consist of two buttons: one for power and the other for controlling fan speeds and modes. This simplicity is part of the appeal, though a few functions, like brightness and child lock, require pressing specific button combinations since they don’t have dedicated buttons.
Filtration Technology
The 311i Max uses Blueair’s HEPASilent technology. This pairs a pleated particle filter with an electrostatic ionizer that charges particles in the air, making them easier for the filter to capture. This design lets air pass through a thinner filter than a standard HEPA purifier needs, so the fan can move more air while staying relatively quiet.
Two details are worth knowing here.
First, Blueair says the unit reaches HEPA-level performance but does not market it as a certified True HEPA filter. Second, the ionizer runs at all times and cannot be turned off. That is common across Blueair’s Blue Pure lineup, but it sets the brand apart from competitors like Coway and Winix, which let users turn off the ionizer if they prefer not to use one.
Blueair states that the 311i Max is Zero Ozone Certified, and independent testing found ozone output of around 2 parts per billion, well below recognized safety limits.
The filter also includes a layer of Carbon-Impregnated Fabric for everyday odors. It suppresses cooking or pet smells reasonably well. It is not built for strong odors or chemical fumes, since it lacks the dense activated carbon pellets found in purifiers made specifically for that job.
Smart Features and App
The Blueair Blue Pure 311i Max connects to Wi-Fi and pairs with the Blueair app. From the app, you can:
- Monitor real-time air quality and view historical PM2.5 data
- Set an auto-cleaning schedule
- Turn the unit on automatically when arriving home, using geofencing
- Track filter life and receive replacement reminders
- Adjust LED brightness and enable a child lock
You can also turn on Auto mode, which uses a built-in sensor to raise or lower fan speed based on pollution levels in the room. That sensor is optical rather than laser, so it needs occasional cleaning to stay accurate. You can give basic voice commands through Alexa and Google Assistant.
Room Size and Coverage
Blueair markets this purifier as able to clean spaces up to around 2,000 square feet in an hour. That figure is technically accurate, but it reflects a single air exchange rather than the repeated cleaning needed to keep a room’s air consistently fresh. For continuous air cleaning, five air changes per hour is a better benchmark. At that rate, the 311i Max is better suited to rooms around 400 to 450 square feet, such as bedrooms, home offices, and small living rooms.
Performance
Blueair rates the 311i Max at a CADR of about 250 cubic feet per minute for dust, pollen, and smoke.
Low noise is one of its strongest features. In sleep mode, it operates at 29 to 35 decibels, making it quiet enough for nighttime use. At the lowest fan speed, noise stays below 40 decibels. The highest setting is noticeably louder, reaching 48 to 58 decibels, but that’s reasonable considering how much air the purifier moves.
The 311i Max also uses relatively little power. It draws less than 1 watt on standby and around 29 to 32 watts at full speed, which is lower than many common household lights. It also carries an ENERGY STAR Most Efficient certification.
Price
The Blue Pure 311i Max has a price tag of $229.99 in the US on the company’s official website. However, you can get it from Amazon, Best Buy, and Target at a discounted price of about $150 to $200.
Running costs matter with any air purifier. This one is relatively cheap to run. Replacement filters cost around $44 to $45 and need to be swapped every six to nine months, working out to roughly $80 to $90 a year. Combined with its low electricity draw, total annual running costs land somewhere between $80 and $120, depending on how often you run it and at what speed.
Pros
- Fast, effective air cleaning for its size and price
- Very quiet on low and medium fan speeds
- Low energy use and reasonable long-term running costs
- Attractive design with swappable, washable colored pre-filters
- Useful app with scheduling, air quality history, and geofencing
- Lightweight and easy to move between rooms
- Zero Ozone Certified despite using an ionizer
Cons
- The ionizer cannot be turned off
- Not a certified True HEPA filter, despite HEPA-style marketing
- Weak at removing strong odors and chemical fumes (VOCs)
- Child lock exists but does not fully prevent kids from turning off the unit
- Optical PM2.5 sensor needs manual cleaning to stay accurate
- No countdown timer
- The fabric pre-filter can be fiddly to remove and reinstall
Verdict
The Blueair Blue Pure 311i Max is an excellent choice if you want a quiet, energy-efficient air purifier for a small space of up to 450 square feet. It cleans air quickly, looks good doing it, and adds little to an electricity bill. The companion app is genuinely useful, not a gimmick, and the design looks beautiful in most homes without looking out of place.
However, it is not the right pick for everyone. If you want to avoid ionizers, need strong odor or VOC removal, or have young children who require a fully childproof appliance, you may want to look elsewhere.
