YouTube To Start Including ‘Don’t Recommend’ Feature In Certain Channels

YouTube is now giving users a bit more freedom and control, at least in terms of what they see on their home page and ‘Up Next’ recommendations.

Previously, these features were predetermined by YouTube’s own algorithm, which the company is now allowing more users to see a little clearer.

“Sometimes, we recommend videos from channels you haven’t seen before based on what other viewers with similar interests have liked and watched in the past,” YouTube explains with regards to the reason why a certain video appears in a user’s Recommended list. “Our goal is to explain why these videos surface on your homepage in order to help you find videos from new channels you might like.”

The platform will now show users a small box underneath each Recommended video why that certain video was selected. One of the possible explanations could be something along the lines of, “viewers who watch your favorite channels also watch this,” though it could also be more complex than that.

If the user feels like the suggestion is not appropriate or doesn’t match their interests, however, they can now click the three-dot button at the upper right side of the video and select the ‘Don’t Recommend’ option. This removes that video from the list and also prevents any future videos from that channel from appearing in the user’s Recommended list again.

The new feature will be rolling out on iOS and Android globally. It will also eventually be released to the desktop version of the video-streaming platform.
