Social Media Outages Spark Outrage

Nothing brings out the torches and pitchforks like Facebook going down.

Several social media sites such as Facebook, Whatsapp, and Instagram were affected by outages over the weekend, according to outage tracking website Downdetector. There were over 9000 reports from people having issues with Facebook. The report also revealed that Asia and Europe suffered the greatest hit from the outage, since majority of the reports are from these regions.

As some may remember, in March, Facebook experienced one of its longest outages so far. Facebook, alongside its other sister apps, Whatsapp and Instagram, was out for more than 24 hours, earning the ire of millions of users.

Although the sites have now been fixed, users are still expressing their frustration on social media sites like Twitter. Many users are tweeting with the hashtag #FacebookDown #FacebookOutage #InstagramDown and #WhatsAppDown to share their annoyances with the Facebook-run platforms.

One user, @TheNLBobby, says, “Breaking News — People are being forced to go outside and socialize with one another in the wake of the current global #FacebookOutage #FacebookDown #instagramdown”

Another user commends Twitter for staying up despite the outages, tweeting “When Twitter is the only app that can keep it together. Props to you Twitter! #Whatsappdown #instagramdown”
