Samsung Teases Foldable Smartphone

Hopefully be a new smartphone trend this year. In a callback to the flip phones of a previous era, the tech company is developing a new foldable phone. While the idea of a foldable smartphone has been in the works for quit some time, Samsung hopes to be the first to release the product, and hopes it will lead to a shift in technology and place Samsung at the front of smartphone development.

DJ Koh, an executive at Samsung, made a statement that it was “time to deliver” on the product, and it may be available as soon as November of 2018. This would make the phone a major competitor with Apple’s newest phone that it said to be unveiled in September of this year and would also be available in November. Samsung was fairly quiet about phones during IFA tech conference recently, but the news of a foldable phone being ready for the market has stirred up lots of interest.

The design of the foldable phone has been kept very secret, and will probably be the driving force behind the sale of the phone. Analysts believe that if the new design can drum up enough interest, people will flock to buy the phone, even with a projected hefty price tag. Apple proved earlier this year that consumers will pay at least up to $1,000 dollars for phones with the iPhone X, and the foldable Samsung phone may cost up to $1,500. The trend in the smartphone market has been towards bigger screens, and this foldable phone will apparently have a continuous, flexible screen. The flexible screen has been a recent technological development that several companies, including LG, have explored.
