MoviePass Says Goodbye To LA Office

MoviePass has closed down its office in Los Angeles, California after laying off its nine employees in the business development team, along with Moviefone staff, last February, Business Insider reports.

The company was apparently subleasing its space from Abrams Artists Agency. The talent agency asked Moviefone to move out, citing its plan to expand its business, to which the latter agreed. The company said in an interview with Business Insider, “MoviePass has refocused the business model on subscriptions and making movies, and away from MoviePass ad sales to third parties. Thus, all MoviePass Los Angeles operations were combined to a single MoviePass Films office, and the second office has been closed.”

According to some former employees of the company, while the space had “beautiful views”, the conditions were not as ideal for the office employees. For one, the space only had a few extension cords that the employees were using for their power supply. MoviePass also allegedly didn’t keep the office well-provided. Employees had to frequently request for post-its, pens and even bottled water, which was often rejected anyway. “Especially the water,” says one source. “It’s expensive.”

As for Moviefone staff, a source told Business Insider that they would all be transferred to the company’s production arm, the office for MoviePass Films.
