Waymo Partnering With Nissan-Renault-Mitsubishi On Self-Driving Cars

The alliance of Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi is rumored to be striking an interesting partnership with Google’s self-driving car company Waymo, reports the Nikkei.

Waymo will reportedly be working together with the automotive companies in order to create new autonomous vehicles that can be used for transportation services using self-driving technology. According to the Nikkei, “The partnership would unite a car alliance whose global sales totaled 10.8 million automobiles in 2018 with a developer whose self-driving vehicles have traveled over 10 million miles on U.S. public roads as of October.”

Google’s self-driving company, which was first launched in 2009 and was previously known as the Google self-driving car project, already has partnerships with other carmakers such as Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Jaguar Land Rover, but this new partnership could possibly be the biggest deal of all.

“The alliance and Waymo will cooperate in what is known as mobility as a service, or MaaS, a shift from vehicle ownership to the use of on-demand transportation,” the Nikkei reports. “Possibilities include developing a fleet of driverless taxis using Nissan vehicles and a system that handles reservation and payments.”

In addition to this, the companies are also reportedly “in the final phase of talks, and plan to announce the arrangement as early as spring.”

However, Reuters has reported that the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance is yet to confirm the rumor. Google’s Waymo, on the other hand, has declined Reuters’ request to comment.
