The iPhone Duo’s hinge survived more than 32,000 test folds, yet some inner screens cracked within hours of use.

Apple’s first foldable went on sale on October 23, and early buyers are frustrated. The iPhone Duo’s inner screen is vulnerable, and a small number of units have already failed.

This article covers how the phone has performed so far and how it might age over several years.

What has performed well

The hinge has passed every fold test so far. A robot folded one iPhone Duo 32,640 times over four nights, and the hinge showed no noticeable crease and felt almost the same as new. In another test, the phone was folded 10,000 times at room temperature, then 1,000 times at -20 degrees Celsius, and the results were the same. This shows the hinge is durable, but it doesn’t show how long it will last.

The outer glass and frame also performed well:

  • The outer screen showed only minor scratches when tested at level 7 on the Mohs scale.
  • The titanium frame picked up scuffs in corner drops, but they were hard to see.
  • A robotic drop onto the open phone’s inner screen caused no cracks.

In an everyday test, the phone was dropped many times from hand and pocket height onto sidewalks and asphalt. It kept working. However, after repeated drops, the rear camera glass eventually shattered, the frame chipped, and the folding screen showed marks, but the phone still worked.

Where the iPhone Duo is vulnerable

Reports began on launch day. One owner said the inner screen cracked after six hours and fewer than 20 folds, with no earlier marks on the screen or hinge. Another owner reported a crack in the inner screen even before setup was finished.

Here is what most owners describe as a similar pattern:

  • The hinge feels stiff or stuck.
  • A bump under the screen near the crease.
  • Cracks or lines along the crease follow a crunching sound, and sometimes a white patch on the right side.

Apple has acknowledged a problem with the inner display on a small number of units and tells affected owners to contact AppleCare for a replacement. However, it has not given a cause.

It is still unknown how many units are affected, and replacements have been slow because stock is limited. The fold tests and these failures don’t contradict each other, because a problem that affects only some units wouldn’t necessarily show up in tests on one or two phones.

In a test where the phone was covered in sand, dust, and dirt, grit entered at a few points around the hinge, and the magnets could no longer pull the phone shut. The IP68 rating prevents dust and water from entering the phone, but it doesn’t mean the hinge will keep closing smoothly. A separate test with fine powder found that most of it stopped at adhesive barriers, yet enough reached the hinge to make it sound crunchy.

Apple’s own handling guidance tells owners to keep sand and grit away from the hinge.

A soft cover layer covers the inner screen. It’s rated 2 on the Mohs scale, far below the outer glass and in line with other folding phones. The matte finish hides scratches while the screen is on, but the marks show when it is off. Peeling the layer off at home is not advised, because it risks damaging the display.

The crease also becomes more visible with use. One test saw a clear change after only 500 folds, and the crease was deeper after 10,000. Another test found it deeper than on two other foldables after 3,000 folds. The display kept working normally, and the crease is hard to notice during normal use.

What does the damage repair cost

The iPhone Duo costs $1,999 in the US, and the inner display is the most expensive part to repair. These are US prices for out-of-warranty repairs:

Repair Without AppleCare+ With AppleCare+
Inner display $999 $99
Outer display $379 $29
Inner cover layer (scratches only) $49 $19
Other accidental damage Up to $1,499 $99

AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss costs $19.99/month, $199.99/year, or $399 upfront. With the upfront plan, one inner display repair costs $498 in total, compared with $999 without it. The one-year warranty should cover defects that appear in normal use, and buyers have a 14-day return window.

Verdict

So far, the evidence doesn’t show the iPhone Duo is too fragile for daily use. The hinge resisted wear, the outer glass resisted scratches, and the frame scuffed only lightly, and the phone kept working through many everyday drops.

Yet it is still more fragile than a regular iPhone in specific ways:

  • The inner screen is soft and may fail under extreme force and heavy impacts.
  • Grit can jam the hinge, even though the phone has an IP68 rating.

Buyers can reduce the risk in a few ways:

  • Keep sand and dirt away from the hinge, and do not press on the phone while it is open.
  • If the hinge feels unusually stiff or you feel a bump under the screen, stop folding the phone and contact AppleCare.
  • Check the phone closely during the 14-day return window.
  • Consider AppleCare+, because an inner display repair without it costs half the phone’s price.
