Gaming Industry Analyst Questions Sony’s E3 2019 Snub

Recently, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that they would be skipping out on E3 2019. This came as a huge surprise to everyone, as E3 is the biggest gaming event of the year. Some think it is a smart move on Sony’s part, due to some speculated reasons that we’ll delve into later, but a lot of folks think it’s the wrong play. One such person is Michael Patcher. Considered to be one of the video gaming industry’s most prolific analysts, Micahel Patcher, who is Head of Research at Wedbush Securities, believes that Sony is making the wrong decision is skipping out on E3 next year. He believes that Sony won’t actually skip out on E3 entirely, but will just fly under the radar with a run-of-the-mill booth.

Rumors are running rampant as to figure out Sony’s reasoning. On one hand, many believe that Sony won’t be attending because they don’t have any heavy-hitters ready to announce at the time of the event. Given the current release schedule for PS4, this isn’t too far of a stretch. Another popular theory is that Sony is focusing all their time on the PS5, and have decided that since the PS4 is no longer their top console priority, that’s it is not worth heavily investing into the system anymore.

But is that a wise move? Even if the PS5 is on the near-horizon and Sony’s number one priority, wouldn’t it be a good idea to have the PS4 go out with a bang? Wouldn’t it be good to give such a successful console a swan song instead of breaking up the band before one last album? Hopefully, over the next few months, Sony will be more transparent about their reasoning, as well as their plans for the PS4 and the PS5. Until then, we can only speculate.
