You might wanna stay off Twitter for a little while…

This morning, the director of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Masahiro Sakurai, hosted a presentation to reveal the final fighter for the game’s first Fighter’s Pass. The fighter in question has been revealed to be Byleth, the protagonist of Fire Emblem: Three Houses. In addition to his sword, Byleth wields an axe, a spear, and bow to differentiate himself from the other Fire Emblem representatives. Also, as with Robin and Corrin, Byleth can be played as either a male or a female. In addition to Byleth, the game will be receiving new Mii Fighter costumes based on Altair from Assassin’s Creed, the Rabbids, Mega Man X, MegaMan.exe from Mega Man Battle Network, and Cuphead (which also includes a music track).

Immediate reactions to Byleth’s announcement have been… mixed, to put it diplomatically. As of writing, the like/dislike bar on the YouTube video for the announcement is showing 19K thumbs up against 13K thumbs down, and multiple Smash-related tags are trending high on Twitter. Though, in a spot of positivity, many people have congratulated Studio MDHR, the developer of Cuphead, for their character’s cameo.

It was also announced that, alongside Byleth’s release, pre-orders will open for the second Fighter’s Pass for Smash Ultimate, which will feature an additional six characters to the roster. No word yet on when the next batch of characters will begin releasing, though.

Byleth and the new Mii costumes will be available for purchase on January 28th, 2020.
