Bumble: The Sleeper Dating App

It seems like everyone is on a “technology detox” nowadays. And while this isn’t a bad thing, it’s actually causing apps and technology developers to reconsider the way they design their platforms. One of the first applications to really embrace this new trend is Bumble. This dating app is now letting you “snooze” your account. For anywhere from 24 hours to indefinitely, anyone who matches with you or messages you will be alerted that you’re taking a break from social media (and you can state the reason, too) and that you won’t receive notifications.

Bumble’s CEO, Whitney Wolfe Herd, is acknowledging the people in the world who have sacrificed their mental wellbeing in exchange for screen time. She wants people to get back to their old ways, despite the advances that technology has given us. And this is just one of the ways that Bumble stands out from other dating apps, despite being less popular than staples like Tinder.

Snooze on Bumble will be launching for iOS 12 and Android Pie, where the feature will be rolled out slowly before being fully implemented. Whether or not it will have a positive effect on the usage of mobile devices, only time will tell.
