Sony PS4 Has Almost 100M Units Sold Worldwide

Sony announced this Monday at its pre-Consumer Electronics Show press conference that the lifetime sales of the PlayStation 4 is now approaching 100 million units sold worldwide.

“I would like to express my deepest gratitude to our passionate community around the globe, and our partners, for helping us achieve these milestones,” President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment John Kodera said during the press-con. “This year, we will bring more enhanced experiences to our fans along with a highly anticipated lineup of games that are only possible on PS4.”

Currently, Sony’s best-selling console is the PlayStation 2, followed by the original PlayStation, with 155 million and 102 million units sold respectively. The PS2 was discontinued after 12 years while the original PlayStation was discontinued after 11 years in production.

The PS4’s predecessor, the PlayStation 3, had sold a total of 84 million units by the time it was discontinued in May 2017, 11 years after it was first released. The PlayStation 4 had already surpassed this number back in July 2018, when they declared that they had already sold more than 82 million units. This is pretty amazing considering that the PS4 was not even halfway into its supposedly 10-year-plus lifespan, having been released in 2013.

The company says the increase is due to the holidays, which translated to strong sales for PlayStation. 5.6 million consoles and 50.7 million PS4 games were reportedly sold during the holiday season, with Marvel’s Spider-Man topping at 9 million copies. Similarly, strong growth was also observed in the company’s PlayStation Network, having reached 90 million total subscribers last November.

The total number of PS4 sales is sitting at 91.6 million right now, but Sony is expecting to hit the 100-million milestone before the end of January 2019.
