FedEx Shows Off First Autonomous Delivery Robot

As our world shifts towards autonomous gadgets, autonomous robots, and autonomous technology, more and more companies have been trying to find ways to ‘keep up with the times’, as the saying goes. FedEx, in an effort to compete with other big companies like Amazon, has unveiled its first autonomous robot meant for short-distance deliveries.

Called the SameDay Bot, this autonomous robot is completely battery-powered, able to drive itself at a top speed of 10 miles per hour. The robot can also make its way around traffic using a variety of LIDAR sensors, similar to the ones found in self-driving cars.

FedEx is not the only company to be experimenting with autonomous delivery robots, but there are some things that make the SameDay Bot stand out from the rest of the competition. The SameDay Bot was created with the help of Dean Kamen, an engineer who was responsible for the creation of the Segway and iBot, the stair-climbing upright wheelchair. Similarly, the SameDay Bot also uses the same technology, using multiple pairs of wheels to climb up and down stairs. It can also communicate with pedestrians using screens placed on its front and rear. The former shows “hello” while the latter indicates the robot’s direction as well as its next move.

Currently, FedEx is arranging partnerships with several companies like Pizza Hut, Lowe’s, AutoZone, Walmart, Target, and Walgreens to see how many companies can benefit from this autonomous delivery robot.
