Instagram Adds Option to Shop In-App

Like those shoes in an Instagram post? Buy ’em.

Instagram has added a new feature to its app – one that will help people who would like to shop for items while browsing through photos on their IG timelines.

The Facebook-owned app announced that the new feature will be slowly rolled out internationally, beginning in the United States. US users can now view a brand’s shopping post and tap it to immediately show the product tag and price. After which, interested customers can then tap on the image once again to be redirected to the Instagram in-app checkout screen. Users will then have the option to pick their desired size and color as well as input their payment method, shipping address, and email address. Users even have the option to save their details for faster checkout next time.

In return for this new feature, Instagram is charging retailers what they call a ‘selling fee’. Some of the companies that are now available for this feature include Nike, Adidas, Dior, H&M, MAC Cosmetics, Michael Kors, Oscar de la Renta, Prada, Uniqlo, Warby Parker, and Zara, according to The Verge.

“Checkout is just one part of our long-term investment in shopping,” Instagram says in an official blog post. “We’re excited to introduce even more ways for people to enjoy shopping on Instagram this year.”

The company apparently believes that “shopping represents a massive new business opportunity.” On Monday, it revealed that a total of 130 million per month actually tap on shopping ads posted on the platform.
