Verizon Launches 5G Service in Two Cities

It’s there and it’s fast, but not everyone can find it.

Verizon has finally launched its wireless 5G service in two cities in the US, namely Chicago and Minneapolis. The service launched about a week earlier than Verizon had announced previously.

Users with 5G equipped smartphones can now access a faster wireless service with Verizon in limited areas in these cities, going from a maximum of 100 Mbps speed to a maximum of 1 Gbps speed, or 10x the maximum speed of 4G. However, only users of the Motorola Z3 can access this new speed, as it’s the only phone out on the market that supports 5G. Samsung’s Galaxy S10 5G model will soon add to the list later this year, and it will be exclusive to Verizon customers for a while.

In a statement, Verizon’s chairman and CEO, Hans Vestberg, said, “Verizon customers will be the first in the world to have the power of 5G in their hands.”

The areas covered in Chicago include Union Station, The Art Institute of Chicago, Millennium Park, Willis Tower, The Chicago Theatre, The Gold Coast, Old Town, River North, and the Verizon store on The Magnificent Mile. In Minneapolis, the 5G covered areas include the Mill City Museum, the Minneapolis Central Library, the Minneapolis Convention Center, First Avenue, Target Center, The Commons, Elliot Park, US Bank Stadium, Downtown West, Downtown East, and the Verizon store in The Mall of America.

The company also announced last month that customers who want to upgrade their unlimited data plans to 5G would only have to pay an additional $10 per month.
