PSN Will Soon Allow Name Changing

Since the release of the PlayStation 3 in 2006, players have been unable to change the name they created when they first signed up for the PlayStation Network. Players who made accounts twelve years ago have expressed remorse over their terrible choices of names and have been begging Sony to allow for name changing for years. I sympathize; I still have the same email address I made when I was ten, and I still cringe every time I have to verbally give it to someone.

Sony announced today that they are officially working on a system to allow PSN users to change their IDs. The system is set to be rolled out for all PlayStation Network users some time in early 2019. The first name change is offered free-of-charge, but any subsequent changes will cost $9.99 for regular users and $4.99 for PlayStation Plus users. This is to discourage scammers and hackers from constantly changing their names. If a player decides they don’t like their new name, they will also be able to revert it at no additional cost. Sony also clarified that the majority of PS4 games will be compatible with this update, though they didn’t say which, if any games, wouldn’t be.
