Development Has Begun on a New ‘BioShock’

There’s always a man, there’s always a lighthouse, there’s always a city.

BioShock is one of my most beloved game franchises of all time. When people ask me what my favorite video game is, I usually say the original BioShock (which often earns a confused head tilt, because people who ask that question don’t usually play video games). The first game had some fascinating narrative elements and deep lore, not to mention crafty, strategic combat from swapping between guns and Plasmids. BioShock Infinite told a fascinating character-driven story that subtly incorporated themes from the first game in an entirely different manner, and featured exciting, high-flying swashbuckling set pieces. And BioShock 2… existed. I could talk forever about this, but the point is that 2K formally announced today that a new BioShock game is in the works, and I’m excited.

In lieu of Infinite‘s developer, the sadly defunct Irrational Games, 2K has assembled a new studio, Cloud Chamber, to take the helm on this new project. Unfortunately, they were not able to secure the series’ longtime director, Ken Levine. However, they did manage to enlist several BioShock alumni, including Hoagy de la Plante, Scott Sinclair, Jonathan Pelling, who have collectively worked on all three games in the series.

In an interview with IGN, 2K was understandably cagey with details about the game, since it is still very early in development. They couldn’t give any concrete information about the gameplay or whether the story would be set in Rapture, Columbia, or elsewhere. Cloud Chamber’s head, Kelley Gilmore, explained that the studio hopes “that fans love our future plans for this environment. That said, it’ll be a bit of a wait for more details, as the game will be in development for several years.”
