Google Blames ‘Data Error’ After Joe Biden Was Missing from U.S. Presidents Search Results

This week, Google faced backlash after users noticed that former President Joe Biden was missing from its search results for “U.S. Presidents.” The omission, which removed Biden from lists that typically range from George Washington to the current president, was quickly labeled a “data error” by Google. The issue has since been resolved, but it raised questions about the reliability of the tech giant’s information systems.

What Happened?

The glitch was first noticed on Wednesday when searches for “U.S. Presidents” failed to include Biden, who concluded his presidential term earlier this week. Instead, the lists jumped directly from Donald Trump to George Washington, prompting users to share screenshots of the omission across social media.

Google restored Biden to the search results on Thursday, with a spokesperson attributing the issue to an error in its knowledge graph system. “We identified the root cause and resolved it quickly,” the company said in a statement.

A Tough Year for Google

This misstep adds to a series of high-profile challenges for Google in 2025. Earlier this year, its AI-generated image tool Imagen 2 was pulled after users found significant historical inaccuracies. Similarly, the company’s AI Overview product faced scrutiny for delivering misleading summaries in search results.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai has acknowledged these challenges, urging employees to remain focused on delivering reliable information, particularly during sensitive moments like elections. In a memo sent on Election Day, Pichai wrote, “We must maintain our role as a trusted source of information for people of every background and belief.”

Public Concerns and Scrutiny

Google’s error in omitting Biden comes amid broader scrutiny of tech companies’ influence on public information. Critics argue that these glitches can erode public trust, especially during politically sensitive times.

Though the error was resolved quickly, it serves as a reminder of the stakes involved in managing massive, global information systems. As Pichai noted in a recent employee meeting, “Tech is now impacting society at scale.”

While Google has resolved the immediate issue, the company faces mounting pressure to ensure its products provide accurate and reliable information. As the tech giant navigates its growing influence, maintaining trust will be key to addressing concerns from both users and regulators alike.
