The new Tides of the Foscari DLC for Vampire Survivors has introduced a variety of new characters, weapons, mechanics, and more to an already jam-packed game. Considering all these new magical spells and enchanted weapons, the idea of swinging a plain old sword around may seem a bit gauche, but you should never underestimate the kind of madman who would knowingly bring a sword to a magic fight. Here’s a guide to Eskizzibur in Vampire Survivors, including unlocking and evolving it.

Vampire Survivors Eskizzibur Unlock and Evolution Guide

Eskizzibur is one of the new weapons introduced in Vampire Survivors’ Tides of the Foscari DLC. At a glance, it doesn’t seem like much more than a regular greatsword with a name vaguely reminiscent of Excalibur. Indeed, when first obtained, it merely creates a slash to the side of your character, not unlike the base Whip. However, it has a couple of special abilities. Firstly, in the event you are damaged by an enemy, Eskizzibur automatically Retailliates, damaging them back instantly. Secondly, with a bit of leveling, the sword can also slam the ground in the direction you’re facing, dealing AoE damage.

Eskizzibur is the starting weapon of one of the DLC’s new starting characters, Maruto Cuts. He’s unlocked by creating Eleanor Uziron’s Spellstrom ability, a weapon evolution produced when her SpellString, SpellStream, and SpellStrike abilities all reach level 6. Once you’ve unlocked Maruto Cuts, you can then unlock Eskizzibur for the regular item pool by surviving a round with Maruto for at least 15 minutes.

Eskizzibur’s evolved form is known as Legionnaire. In addition to the sword’s basic slash, ground pound, and Retalliation abilities, every swing also launches out phantom duplicates with their own slashes and Retalliation. Like all weapon evolutions, evolving Eskizzibur requires you to meet a certain level threshold with the weapon, as well as a level threshold for a companion passive item.

For this particular combination, you need to raise Eskizzibur to its maximum level of 8. You’ll also need to obtain the Armor passive item and raise its level to its max of 5. Once both items are maxed out, you’ll need to pick up a chest, at which point Eskizzibur will be automatically upgraded to Legionnaire.

If you’re wondering about a dude named “Maruto” shooting out shadowy clones of himself, well, we can’t say for sure, but it is most likely a nod to a certain orange-clad ninja. Hey, he can reference whatever he wants, as long as his sword is good at cleaving up baddies. Believe it.
