Mitigating the Risks: Experts Warn of AI’s Threat to Humanity

Scientists and industry leaders, including Microsoft and Google executives, have warned about the dangers of artificial intelligence (AI) to humanity. They argue that mitigating the risk of AI-induced extinction should be a global priority on par with pandemics and nuclear war. Figures like Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, and renowned computer scientist Geoffrey Hinton signed the statement.

Concerns about AI systems surpassing human intelligence have grown with the emergence of highly capable AI chatbots like ChatGPT. This has prompted countries worldwide to draft regulations, with the European Union leading the way through the expected approval of the AI Act later this year.

The concise statement was intentionally brief to encompass a broad coalition of scientists who may differ in their opinions on risks and preventive measures. The nonprofit Center for AI Safety organized the effort to encourage experts from top universities to express their concerns.
