The new character is named Rivet, if you were wondering.
While perhaps not to the same degree as Nintendo, Sony does keep a stable of mascots on hand for its consoles, and whenever there’s a new console, those mascots need at least one game. Case in point, the PlayStation 5 is already out and about, and soon enough, we’ll have the latest installment of the adventures of gearhead-turned-adventurer Ratchet and his eloquent robot sidekick Clank.
A new trailer released on the official PlayStation YouTube channel has provided some details on the upcoming Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, the newest installment in the shooter/platformer series from Insomniac Games. In the trailer, we see the return of Ratchet and Clank’s longtime nemesis, Dr. Nefarious, who uses a special device to tear the fabric of space and time to whisk the three of them to a dimension where Nefarious rules supreme. Ratchet and Clank are separated in the process, leaving Ratchet to search for his friend on his own while Clank teams up a local Lombax hero named Rivet (of whom there was already copious fanart before we even knew her name).
The game seems to feature the usual blend of platforming and gunplay seen in the series, but with an additional emphasis on high-speed action setpieces. By shooting at tears in reality, our heroes can jump between multiple dimensions, battling Nefarious’ minions as they go with a new array of wacky weaponry. The PS5’s capabilities will be on full display in these dimensions, if the stunning visuals seen in the trailer are any indication.

As an additional fun fact, the game’s music will be composed by Mark Mothersbaugh, co-founder and lead singer of the classic rock band DEVO. You can hear the group’s own “Uncontrollable Urge” playing in the background of the trailer.
“We are so thrilled to be collaborating with Mark” said Insomniac Games’ Marcus Smith. “[We] cannot wait for you to hear the incredible score he’s come up with!”
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is scheduled to release on June 15, 2021. In addition to the standard edition, there will also be a digital deluxe edition, which includes five special armor skins, a digital artbook, a soundtrack, and 20 Raritanium, which is used in-game for upgrading stuff.
