Shocking Culinary Developments

90% of Americans consume too much salt in their diet. Is it because we like the taste of salty foods? Or are we more fond of sweet, sour, bitter, and spicy tastes? Soon, thanks to the Maine Multi-sensory Interactive Media Lab, our forks and knives might be able to shock our mouth into tasting flavors that aren’t actually there. By stimulating the right parts of our mouths, taste buds can trick us into tasting our favorite foods without actually consuming them. This new prototype invention could make us even taste the foods we do eat with even more potency, adding to the delicacy.

The science behind this cool cutlery is pretty simple too. The electric current can replicate sourness, bitterness, and saltiness with up to 70 percent accuracy just by sending it to the right section of your mouth. And while the research is “still in its infancy” we soon may be able to get that taste of chocolate cake without having to eat it. Imagine turning your healthy foods into sweet treats just by using the right set of silverware.

Other developments in the food and tech crossover industry include a glass that lets you taste your favorite cocktails without having to consume the actual ingredients, so make sure to watch the full playlist above to see just where the future of food takes us.
