The Nothing Phone 1 is slated for release this summer.
Since the release of the their true wireless Ear 1 earbuds last year, up and coming electronics manufacturer Nothing has been making waves in the industry as it seeks to strike at some of the biggest names from the shadows. Earlier in the year, the company’s CEO, Carl Pei, teased the existence of their next major avenue of attack: a smartphone.
Yesterday, Pei released some new details about this smartphone, which has been named the Phone 1 in the same vein as the Ear 1 earbuds. The Phone 1 will feature the latest Snapdragon chipset, as well as the company’s proprietary Nothing OS, an Android-based operating system designed to be concise and minimalistic.
“Nothing OS captures the best features of pure Android, distilling the operating system to just the essentials, where every byte has a purpose,” Pei explained during a reveal event for the device. “It is designed to deliver a fast, smooth and personal experience. A coherent interface, the hardware seamlessly integrates with software through bespoke fonts, colours, graphical elements and sounds.”

A launcher for a test build of Nothing OS will be available to download on select smartphone models next month. As for the Phone 1 itself, it doesn’t have a set release date just yet, but Nothing is shooting for a release some time this summer.
