Samsung Finally Unveils Its First Foldable Smartphone

Samsung has finally unveiled its first foldable smartphone: the Samsung Galaxy Fold, a smartphone-tablet hybrid that can unfold from a 4.6-inch phone to a 7.3-inch phablet.

DJ Koh, the head of Samsung’s mobile business, says, “To those who say they’ve seen it all, I say, buckle your seat belt, the future is about to begin.”

The Galaxy Fold has two versions, one in 4G and one in 5G. It makes use of a smooth but powerful hinge with hidden gears, a split non-removable battery, and the ‘app continuity’, a new software system that can instantly switch screen options the moment you open your phone.

“We are pushing past the boundaries of technology to inspire renewed innovation and interest in the smartphone industry,” Koh says. The Galaxy Fold has 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, and comes with three cameras on the back, two cameras on the bigger screen, and one selfie camera on the front for a total of six cameras.

Justin Denison, Samsung’s senior vice-president for mobile, says, “With the Galaxy Fold, we’re giving you a powerful smartphone and a revolutionary tablet.”

The Samsung Galaxy Fold will be available on April 26th in the US and May 3rd in Europe for $1,980.
