‘Psychonauts 2’ Dated for August Release

It’ll be available on Xbox consoles, Steam, and Games Pass.

Despite watching three E3 presentations on Sunday, I internalized almost none of it. I get it, it’s a little harder to bring the ol’ razz-matazz during a digital presentation compared to a physical one, but out of all of the trailers and such that I saw, I only specifically recall three things: Guardians of the Galaxy taking up half of Square Enix’s presentation, “I HAVE TO KILL CHAOS,” and Psychonauts 2. Oh wait, hold on, that last one is a big deal.

After heaven knows how long in development, the sequel to Double Fine’s cult classic platformer, Psychonauts 2, has finally been dated for a release on August 25, 2021. As Double Fine is now a subsidiary of Microsoft, the game will be exclusive to Microsoft platforms. What that actually means is that it’ll be available on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC via both the Microsoft Store and Steam. It’ll also be available at launch on Xbox Games Pass on both Xbox consoles and PC, so if you’re subscribed you get to play for free, you lucky devil.

Psychonauts 2 was originally a crowdfunded game, with Double Fine launching a campaign for it back at the tail end of 2015. The campaign did succeed, though it was pretty slow going at first, with developmental details kept tightly under wraps. While I can’t say for sure, I wouldn’t be surprised if the cash injection from Microsoft’s acquisition of Double Fine didn’t help grease the wheels a bit. It’s fine, though; numerous fans and backers (including myself) have been waiting to once again strap on the oversized goggles of Razputin “Raz” Aquato, the world’s youngest psychic secret agent. The game has been developed entirely in house by Double Fine staff, so with any luck, it’ll have that same great writing and art design we know and love.
