Can these see-through wonders be the next big thing?
Ever since they became trendy a few years ago, everyone’s been trying to break into the wireless earbud market. The major electronics brands like Apple naturally have the lion’s share of stake in the sector, but smaller brands have been trying to pull the rug out from under them with more reasonable pricing and reliable builds. One such brand is Nothing, a tech start-up founded by OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei. For a while now, Nothing has been teasing the release of their first major product, a set of true wireless earbuds. Today, we finally got a release date, plus some deets.
The Nothing Ear (1) is a set of wireless earbuds that feature ambient noise cancellation and gesture controls, as well as a 5.7 hour battery life, up to 34 hours when used with their included charging case. They’ve also got a nifty, minimalist design that uses transparent plastic to show you some of the internal circuitry, which reminds me of a lot of electronics in the late 90s and early 2000s. Most of these features are available in other wireless earbuds, but what may attract you to the Ear (1) is the price: a comparatively paltry $99.

Pei calls his company’s creation “a breath of fresh air in a cluttered and indifferent market,” adding that the Ear (1) will “[set] the tone for our connected digital world to come.”
The Ear (1) buds will be available in 45 countries starting on August 17, 2021. There will also be a limited batch sale starting on July 31 if you fancy yourself an early adopter.
