In the midst of a heated foldable smartphone race, one phone maker has decided to take its sweet time.
Brian Kwon, LG’s head of mobile communications and home entertainment divisions, announced at a press conference in Seoul on Friday that the company is in no rush to release a foldable smartphone anytime soon. “We have reviewed releasing the foldable smartphone when launching 5G smartphone but decided not to produce it,” Kwon said, as reported by The Korea Times. “LG’s main issue in smartphone business is to regain its market position. Considering this situation, it is too early for LG to launch a foldable smartphone.”
Rumors of a foldable smartphone from LG first surfaced after the company was found to have registered trademarks for the names “Foldi” and “Duplex” in November of last year. Many speculated that LG would be at least showing the device at CES 2019, only to be disappointed when the company revealed a 65-inch OLED rolling television.
Instead of a foldable smartphone, the South Korean company will soon be launching a 5G version of its flagship V-series line as well as a new G-series with LTE line later this month at the 2019 Mobile World Congress. One of the phones, called the G8 ThinQ, will feature a 3D front-facing camera and is expected to launch on 24 February.
