IVF Turns 40

Forty years ago, on this very day, the lovely Louise Brown was born. Louise was known as the first “test tube baby,” but she doesn’t like that term. Now, her story has become a staple pregnancy method used by millions around the world known as IVF, or in vitro fertilization. Today, on this 40th anniversary, we’re taking a look back at the controversy that began with Louise, and how she’s handling herself forty years later.

Louise now has 2 kids of her own, and unknowingly helped revolutionize the process of getting pregnant. Brown was conceived in a British laboratory as the daughter of John and Lesley Brown, and since her, there have been over 300,000 babies conceived by IVF treatment in the UK alone. Not only has it helped parents who can’t conceive children, the process helps with same-sex couples or anyone who wishes to use a surrogate.

Watch above as we revel in this scientific breakthrough, and take a journey back in time.
