The gaming community is mourning the unexpected closure of Game Informer, one of the world’s longest-running gaming magazines. The US-based publication had been a cornerstone of video game journalism for 33 years, until its print edition and website were abruptly shut down earlier this month.

Game Informer’s final cover featured the horror game The Casting of Frank Stone, a collaboration between Dead by Daylight developer Behaviour Interactive and UK studio Supermassive Games. The developers expressed their deep honor and gratitude for being highlighted in the magazine’s last issue.

Traci Tufte from Supermassive Games praised the coverage, stating, “The team that we worked with was absolutely fantastic. The coverage was wonderful, and I’m grateful that I personally had that opportunity.”

Mathieu Côté from Behaviour Interactive also shared his sentiments, noting, “It’s sad news for everybody. It’s such a tentpole of video game journalism… it’ll be much-missed.” He highlighted the significance of Game Informer’s role in the industry, describing the magazine as a legendary institution.

The magazine’s closure has left its website inaccessible, resulting in the loss of years of articles, including the feature on The Casting of Frank Stone. Fans are now working to retrieve and archive the magazine’s past issues.

The Casting of Frank Stone is a spin-off, single-player horror game set in the universe of Dead by Daylight. Mathieu explained that Supermassive’s cinematic approach made them the ideal partner for the project. He expressed hope that the new game will introduce more players to the Dead by Daylight world, despite the recent challenges faced by the games industry.

The development of The Casting of Frank Stone took about two years, thanks to Supermassive’s established production pipeline. Mathieu and Traci remain optimistic about the future of the horror genre and are excited for the game’s release in early September.

Traci Tufte hopes for a resurgence in the industry, stating, “I think doing more things like this, bringing more innovation, bringing more creative partnerships, that’s certainly going to add a little bit of invigoration.”

Despite the somber news of Game Informer’s closure, the industry continues to evolve and adapt, with new projects and partnerships driving the future of gaming.
