Explore South Africa’s Fossils Through Your Phone Using Virtual Reality

Interested in fossils and archaeological discoveries? There’s a new virtual reality app on your smartphone that will let you explore excavation sites at the famous Cradle of Humankind northwest of Johannesburg in South Africa.

The site has yielded numerous fossils throughout the years, many of which show the development of human evolution. One of the most notable fossils in this collection is the remains of the homo naledi species, an extinct species of hominin first described in 2015.

Although the site is quite popular among enthusiasts, it can be pretty hard to access, mainly due to the small size of the excavation site. In fact, only a few people can fit inside at any given time, which makes it hard for aspiring explorers.

If you’re far from South Africa and would like to see the site for yourself, you can download the VR app for free on your phone’s app store. It comes with narrations for each discovery that are translated into six different languages for your convenience. It also offers a full 360-degree view of each fossil so that you can examine them more closely, giving a more immersive experience to each interested user.
