‘Big Plans’ in Store for ‘Fortnite,’ says Epic CEO

How much bigger can this game get? A lot bigger, according to Tim Sweeney.

Looks like Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has big plans for Fortnite. The CEO revealed to Business Insider at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) his plans to “take Fortnite beyond its roots and make it a true online world.”

“We’re a digital ecosystem company,” Sweeney began. “Fortnite is the 250 million-user version of the tool, which is a game and also a creative platform for 100 million people for building content. Which is an impressive number and bigger than any game engine by far. And then 7.5 million people have been in Unreal Engine 4, the super-high-end content creation tool.”

Even before Fortnite, the Unreal Engine had already given birth to dozens of games. The list includes some high-profile, big budget games such as Bioshock, Kingdom Hearts, Mass Effect, and Gears of War=. Epic Games is now hoping to merge the two together.

“We see that as Fortnite evolves, it’s evolving beyond being a game,” Sweeny continued. “There will be more and more interesting things happening in that world that allows it to evolve in ways that previous games haven’t. It can’t be just a game and it can’t be just an engine, it’s gotta be something that runs the full gamut.”

“Nothing like this exists right now, but we’re seeing it emerge this year. It’s exciting,” he added.
