Beware The DRAGON

Centaurs aren’t the only fantastical creatures coming to life thanks to robotics. Tokyo researches have invented a brand new DRAGON robot that twists and turns in the air like a real dragon would… if they actually existed. And it’s literally named DRAGON (Dual-rotor embedded multilink Robot with the Ability of multi-deGree-of-freedom aerial transformatiON.) Yeah, that’s a mouthful.

This drone has the capability of shape-shifting mid air that uses autonomous technology in order to maneuver around both indoor and outdoor settings. The potential uses for DRAGON are unlimited. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to ride it like a Khaleesi, but it will be able to aid from disaster relief to simple household functions.

The key to DRAGON’s design is its ability to fit through small spaces, unlike most bulkier robots that can only move in certain directions. The technology behind this beast is several ducted fans that ca change positioning due to interlinked modules, making for a flexible and ever-changing drone. The fan thrusts and gimbals affixed to DRAGON allow for extended hover time and quick maneuverability.

You have JSK lab researchers at the University of Tokyo to thank for this daring new contraption, and we can’t wait to see just what this bad boy, or DRAGON, can really do.
