While some gamers may be wondering exactly how long a “Fortnite” lasts (two weeks to be exact), other gamers are devoting way more than that amount of time to perfect their skills at this third-person shooter.
Epic Games, developer of Fortnite, released their game on July 5th, 2017. In less than one year, it has become the largest esport in gaming history: the prize pool is set to be $100 million dollars.
The game has garnered massive success due to its free-to-play platform. Meanwhile, celebrity rappers such as Drake and Travis Scott have been no stranger to the game as well, boosting its popularity to new heights.
“I think that it’s amazing to see how competitive esports has become and that it’s being recognized by so many people,” says Fortnite enthusiast Doug Fisch. “You’re able to play with friends or solo, so the fun can be shared.”
While Doug may not be making his way to the $100 million dollar prize pool anytime soon, online Twitch streamers such as Ninja and Dakotaz give some helpful advice to beginners who maybe one day be competing for the top prizes in the esports scene.
Specifically, Ninja, who attracts the most viewers on Twitch.tv for Fortnite out of all streamers, says “Wins do not equal skill in Fortnite … Stop going for wins when you’re just starting out.”
Regardless of skill, there’s no denying that the popularity of the game is set to grow, as it was just released as an app on mobile devices and cross-compatibility between all systems was also recently implemented.
The more players who join the battle, the harder it will be to reach that $100 million dollar prize pool.
