What is it about “don’t leak user data” that’s so hard for tech companies to get?
Apple has allegedly been sharing personal data from its customers with third parties without permission, according to a report from Gizmodo.
A class-action lawsuit was taken against the tech giant, who is accused of “intentionally and unlawfully” giving out its customers’ listening data on iTunes to third-party companies, which is a huge violation of state privacy laws. Worse, the data is detailed enough to contain personal information pertaining to the user.
In an example presented by the lawsuit, “any person or entity could rent a list with the names and addresses of all unmarried, college-educated woman over the age of 70 with a household income of over $80,000 who purchased country music from Apple via its iTunes Store mobile application.”
This is directly in contrast with Apple’s supposedly pro-privacy stance, wherein the company claims that “what happens on your iPhone, stays on your iPhone.”
The lawsuit has yet to reach a conclusion.
