Meet The Mantis: Fear Incarnate

Apparently, when you combine robotics and spiders, two pretty scary concepts, you get one Guinness World Record broken. British engineer Matt Denton decided to put our nightmare fuel to life by creating a giant, ridable spider that actually works. Granted, it is a hexapod, with hexa- meaning six, but it still looks and acts like a giant spider. The only difference is this spider is more likely to squish you than you are to squish it.

If your worst nightmare, on the other hand, is being chased by a giant killer robot spider, you’re in luck. This diesel-powered behemoth only moves 0.6 miles per hour, despite its wide array of directional commands. You’ll be able to outrun this guy in a heartbeat.

Now you may recognize Matt Denton because he is the creator of BB-8 in the Star Wars franchise. He noted that watching the giant AT-AT’s walk around in “The Empire Strikes Back” was his main inspiration for wanting to get into robotics. The funding for this 2-ton hunk of metal came when he was approached to make a YouTube video featuring it. Little did he know it would skyrocket him to stardom in the World Record book.
