Apple Finds Spying Bug In FaceTime App

Apple has temporarily disconnected the group calling feature in its FaceTime app after a bug that lets callers eavesdrop on the other line was found on Monday.

The issue was first caught and reported by the Apple-related website 9to5Mac, as reported by CNBC. The bug allows callers to hear the audio of the other person on the line, even if they don’t pick up the call. It seems like the bug confuses a new call with a request for a group call, automatically thinking that the group call has already started and therefore switching on the recipient’s microphone despite them not actually accepting the call.

As of 3:16 AM, Tuesday, London Time, Apple’s page now shows the status of Group FaceTime as “temporarily unavailable.” Users will still be able to call others on FaceTime, albeit just one-on-one.

CNBC reports that Apple is already scrambling to fix the issue as we speak. A spokesperson for Apple said, “We’re aware of this issue and we have identified a fix that will be released in a software update later this week.”
