In a groundbreaking development, the United Nations technology agency introduced a collection of human-like robots during a press conference held in Geneva. These nine robots, seated upright alongside their creators, were presented at a podium in a conference center by the International Telecommunication Union, marking it as the world’s inaugural news conference to feature humanoid social robots.
Among the notable robots present at the conference were Sophia, designated as the UNDP’s first robot innovation ambassador, Grace, a healthcare robot, and Desdemona, a robot with a rock star persona. Additionally, two robots named Geminoid and Nadine bore striking resemblances to their human creators.
The objective of this event, hosted at the AI for Good Global Summit, was to demonstrate the capabilities of robotics, as well as their limitations, and how these technologies can contribute to the United Nations’ sustainable development goals. The media session commenced with the robots’ companions or creators introducing them, followed by a question-and-answer session where reporters posed inquiries to the robots.
