Soulja Boy has emerged as someone attempting to break into the video game industry in a major way in the last few months. Along with apparently starting up an esports team, the rapper also entered the world of video game consoles. Soulja Boy released several consoles, both handheld and home consoles, which he sold on his website. There were a few problems with these consoles, however. For starters, all of these consoles are knockoff emulator systems that can be found on Amazon for much cheaper than what Soulja Boy was selling them for. And more importantly, it’s flat-out illegal for Soulja Boy to be selling these consoles, due to copyright laws.
Soulja Boy has been arrogant when talking about the matter, openly claiming that Nintendo wouldn’t do anything to him, apparently not knowing how fiercely Nintendo goes after anyone it views as breaking copyright law. When it comes to emulators, Nintendo has been shutting down emulation sites left and right, And once they caught wind of Soulja Boy’s actions, a lawsuit ensued.
Despite his overconfidence, after Nintendo announced it would be coming after the rapper, all of the Soulja game consoles were promptly lifted from Soulja Boy’s website. If convicted of breaching copyright laws, Soulja Boy could face up to ten years in prison. However, it seems likely that this will be settled out of court and Soulja Boy will probably not see a day in prison.
He has been quiet about the issue and has even stated that his esports team will be launching in January of 2019. Despite this massive embarrassment and quickly becoming a laughing stock in the video game industry, it would seem that Soulja Boy is sticking around in the foreseeable future. Just try not to do anything else illegal there, guy.
