Boeing released their new hypersonic jet concept and says that the technology should be possible within the next decade. This new transportation concept will also cut travel times and possibly could advance space travel.
At the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics in Atlanta, Boeing unveiled their first passenger carrying hypersonic concept. Boeing also released that this concept can be used for commercial and military applications.
Their concept will create the hypersonic speed of Mach 5 that reaches speeds up to 3,900 miles per hour and is seven times faster than a commercial airplane. This new concept can cut travel times from Tokyo to Los Angeles into a three hour flight and a flight from New York to London will take two hours.
One of the biggest challenges behind this concept is creating a craft with materials that can withstand the high heat generated from the high speeds. Object traveling at supersonic have to withstand a surface degree of 1,000 celcius, hot enough to melt aluminum and titanium (common material for air crafts). Another issue with this form of travel will be the sonic boom through areas with low flight patterns, possibly permanently damaging human ears on the ground below.
Though there are many aspects of the design that leave some to question whether this technology will be applicable in the near future, but Boeing is paving the way for this new form of transportation. For more on the new Boeing concept check out the video above.
