Apple had their big unveiling presentation today for both the new model of iPhone and the new Apple Watch. This new piece of wearable tech might seem similar to the previous model, but there’s a lot more cooking under the hood. Metaphorically. Cooking in its case is like, the one thing a computer shouldn’t be doing.
The Apple Watch Series 4, first and foremost, features a larger screen than its predecessor, and its UI has been updated to accommodate. More information can be seen when the watch is in clock mode, such as reminders and the weather. Pictures and video can now also show at a higher resolution. The watch features what is currently the most powerful operating system in wearable tech, WatchOS4, all while maintaining a good 18 hours of life on a full battery charge.
Most notable is the Series 4’s new medical functions. The watch has the ability to detect sudden falls and send out distress signals if the user remains immobile for a long period afterwards. It can also monitor your pulse for abnormalities, and can even be used to take an actual EKG reading. Apple has obtain official permission from the FDA for the Series 4 to be classified as a medical device.
Preorders for the watch open this Friday, and it will ship out on September 21st. The GPS version will run you $399, while the GPS and LTE version will run you $499.
