Signal, the messaging app known for putting privacy first, just made life a little easier for its users. For the very first time, Signal is offering secure cloud backups—so losing your phone no longer means losing your chats.

The new feature introduces both free and paid options, designed to fit different needs while staying true to Signal’s commitment to protecting user privacy.

With the free plan, users get 100MB of storage for text messages and the last 45 days of photos, videos, and other media. Signal has built smart compression into the system, so even frequent texters and media sharers can store a lot more than they’d expect in that space.

For those who want a little extra, Signal is also introducing its first-ever paid feature: full media backups with up to 100GB of storage. This ensures users can keep an extended history of photos, videos, and documents—while helping Signal cover the real-world costs of running secure storage, all without compromising on privacy.

Activating backups is simple. Just head into Settings, turn on the backup option, and Signal will automatically start saving your chats every day. Rest assured, the app uses zero-knowledge technology, which means your backups aren’t tied to your personal details or payment information. Each user gets a 64-character recovery key, generated right on their device, as the only way to unlock their saved data.

While the feature is currently rolling out to beta users on Android, Signal says cross-platform support is on the way. In the future, the company plans to expand options even further, including the ability to save archives wherever users choose and to transfer conversations across platforms.

This long-awaited addition makes Signal not only one of the most private messengers around but also one of the most practical. Whether you stick with the free tier or opt for more storage, Signal now ensures your conversations are secure—even if your phone isn’t.
