Rumors of a beloved smartphone redesign were already going around since January of this year, but it’s only now that Motorola has actually confirmed the news: the company is developing a RAZR-like flip smartphone, reminiscent of the old school days. The best part? It’s probably coming soon.
The mobile phone maker confirmed everyone’s thoughts in an interview with Engadget. Motorola’s foldable smartphone is coming, and it’s launching “no later than everybody else in the market.”
However, unlike the recently revealed Samsung Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X, Motorola’s foldable smartphone won’t have a foldable screen. Instead, it’s going to be a device that flips horizontally in the middle, just like the RAZR flip phones of the last decade or so.
Motorola’s Vice President of Global Product, Dan Dery, says, “We have been testing a plastic OLED device with plastic film on top. The fact that you’re touching it with your nails is scratching it. It has a short life right away, it starts dying the day you unpack it.”
It’s also important to note that Motorola is still taking its time to figure out different configurations for their upcoming foldable smartphone. The company’s main goal is to avoid creating a device that attracts too many scratches. “When you know the scratching issues you would be facing, you will have something that is very rapidly not usable,” Dery says.
