Meta has officially announced the highly anticipated Quest 3 virtual reality and mixed reality headset. The announcement came ahead of the Meta Gaming Showcase, where the company is expected to unveil new games. Priced at $499.99, the Quest 3 will offer 128 GB of storage and is scheduled for release in the fall of 2023. More details about the headset will be shared during Meta Connect on September 27.
While Meta did not provide specific specifications, the company promises improved features for the Quest 3, including higher resolution, enhanced performance, breakthrough Meta Reality technology, and a sleeker and more comfortable design. The Touch Plus controllers have also been redesigned, featuring a more streamlined and ergonomic form.
As the successor to the successful Quest 2, released in 2020 and remains one of the most popular and supported headsets, the Quest 3 maintains its wire-free nature, eliminating the need for a powerful PC. It will be compatible with the entire Quest 2 catalog, and Meta guarantees double the graphical performance of its predecessor, along with higher resolution displays and thinner optics.

While the Quest 3 may not offer revolutionary features compared to the Quest 2, it does boast some improvements. The passthrough mode now includes high-fidelity color passthrough, enhancing the augmented reality gaming experience, particularly for titles like Demeo. Additionally, the Quest 3 introduces redesigned Touch Plus controllers with enhanced haptic feedback, taking inspiration from the more expensive Quest Pro controllers.
Meta has confirmed that it will continue to sell the Quest 2, reducing its starting price to $299.99 for the 128 GB model and $349.99 for the 256 GB model starting June 4. Moreover, an upcoming software update for the Quest 2 will enhance its CPU and GPU performance and user experience.
With the announcement of the Quest 3, Meta aims to build upon the success of its previous headsets, offering improved features and performance to continue captivating the virtual reality and mixed reality gaming community.
