Germs and bacteria are constantly evolving and adapting to our methods of fighting them. It’s not just antibiotics that need to be updated; germs are becoming more resistant to cleaning chemicals, increasing the likelihood of infections. One hospital in Arizona might have the next step in anti-germ warfare.
Honor Health has been using a fleet of 26 “Light Strike” robots to sterilize their patient rooms. After the cleaning staff use their usual bevy of cleaning chemicals, the robots (each of which have their own name, amusingly) are brought in to finish off the tough germs.
The robot is placed in a room and remotely activated, causing it to raise a long, lighthouse-like structure. Powerful ultraviolet light bursts shoot out from the structure, covering the entire room and boiling the germs away. Of course, this can only be done at night when nobody is around, since a human in the room would have their eyebrows microwaved off.
The staff have noticed germ reductions ranging from 40 to 100% since they started using the Light Strikes, along with a notable decrease in skin, blood, and organ infections in the building. The staff have had nothing but positive things to say about the robots, and are hoping to get a few more for the building in the future.
