Duolingo Joins Forces with Netflix to Bring Korean to Squid Game Fans
Get ready for Squid Game Season 2 with a twist—learn Korean while immersing yourself in the world of this thrilling series! In an exciting new partnership, Netflix and Duolingo are launching a unique opportunity for fans to brush up on their Korean before the highly anticipated release on December 26, 2024.
The collaboration introduces more than 40 iconic words and phrases from the show, allowing learners to dive into the language through key moments from the series. Fans can now master phrases like “Trust no one” or “Let’s play a game,” along with terms from fan-favorite scenes, including the “dolgana” (the honeycomb treat from the first season’s third episode). These phrases will be woven into Duolingo’s regular lessons, blending language learning with references from the show to keep things engaging.
Duolingo’s Chief Marketing Officer, Manu Orssaud, shared that since the release of “Squid Game,” the company has seen a 40% surge in Korean learners, with fans flocking to the platform to learn more about the culture behind the series. The collaboration helps deepen that connection, offering a fun, educational way to engage with the content.
To further spice things up, Duolingo has created a TikTok filter featuring its owl mascot, Duo, dressed as one of the show’s infamous pink guards. This fun challenge prompts users to pronounce Korean phrases correctly in a playful take on the Red Light, Green Light game.
The partnership comes as Netflix ramps up its promotional efforts for the second season, which includes special events like “Squid Game: The Experience” in cities like New York, Seoul, and Madrid, where fans can try their hand at the games from the show. Additionally, Netflix is launching the “Squid Game: Unleashed” mobile game on December 17 to bring fans even closer to the action.
By combining entertainment with language learning, Netflix and Duolingo are offering fans a unique way to get ready for the return of “Squid Game”—and perhaps even ace their Korean skills while they’re at it!
