Amazon marks 15 years in Spain with a huge investment that could expand Europe’s AI power while opening new jobs and digital opportunities across the country.

Amazon is making one of its biggest technology bets in Europe. The company has announced plans to invest €33.7 billion in Spain to expand its cloud and data center infrastructure. The goal is simple but powerful. Amazon wants to support the growing demand for artificial intelligence and cloud services across Europe.

The announcement came during Mobile World Congress 2026 in Barcelona. It builds on an earlier plan revealed in 2024 when Amazon committed €15.7 billion to its cloud operations in Spain. Now the company is adding another €18 billion, bringing the total planned investment to €33.7 billion.

This massive expansion will focus on Amazon Web Services, also known as AWS, in the Aragón region of Spain.

Strengthening Europe’s AI and Cloud Ecosystem

If you use online services, stream content, or rely on digital tools at work, chances are cloud technology plays a role behind the scenes. AWS is one of the biggest cloud platforms in the world, and companies across Europe rely on it every day.

With this investment, Amazon plans to expand its data centers so businesses can access faster and more powerful computing systems. These systems help companies store data, run applications, and develop advanced AI tools.

Organizations across Spain already depend on AWS to grow their digital capabilities. Some well known names include Telefónica, BBVA, Iberia, Iberdrola, Mapfre, and the Spanish Red Cross. As AI becomes more important for businesses, demand for cloud services is expected to grow rapidly.

Thousands of Jobs and Economic Growth

Beyond technology, the investment could bring major economic benefits to Spain. Amazon estimates that the project could add around €31.7 billion to Spain’s economy by 2035.

It is also expected to support nearly 29,900 jobs each year across different sectors. These jobs include roles directly at Amazon as well as positions created through construction companies, equipment suppliers, and other local businesses.

About 6,700 of these roles will come directly from Amazon. These include engineers, data center specialists, security staff, and other skilled professionals.

Amazon is also planning supply chain facilities in Aragón to support its data center operations. When fully operational, these facilities could create around 1,800 additional jobs in the region. The project will include server assembly plants, testing facilities, and specialized centers that handle AI and machine learning hardware.

Amazon’s Long Relationship with Spain

Amazon first entered Spain in 2011. Since then, the company has invested more than €20 billion in the country. These investments cover everything from logistics networks and retail operations to cloud infrastructure and innovation programs.

According to Amazon’s chief global affairs and legal officer David Zapolsky, this new investment shows the company’s long term commitment to Spain’s digital future. He said the expansion will support innovation while creating new opportunities for workers, businesses, and communities.

Training the Next Generation of Tech Talent

Technology growth also needs skilled people. That is why Amazon has been investing in digital education across Spain.

Since 2017, AWS has trained more than 200,000 people in cloud and digital skills. The company is now working with Spain’s Ministry of Education to train 500,000 students in artificial intelligence and technology by 2027.

Programs such as AWS Futuro IA, AWS re Start, and Amazon Future Engineer are helping students gain the skills needed for future tech careers.

Renewable Energy and Sustainability Goals

Amazon says the expansion will also support its environmental goals. The company has pledged to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2040.

To power its growing infrastructure, Amazon is investing in solar and wind energy projects across Spain. The AWS data centers in Aragón already run on electricity that is matched with 100 percent renewable energy.

As this new investment moves forward, Spain could become an even more important digital hub for Europe. For Amazon, it is not just about building data centers. It is about shaping the future of AI, cloud technology, and the digital economy.
